SPOTLIGHT ON ACHIEVEMENT
Adapting Simulation Pedagogy to Virtual Course Delivery is a Team Effort
The Healthcare Simulation Center faculty team of Kathy Carver, Rochelle Quinn, Mindy Ritter, and Senior Simulation Specialist Tim Laughlin spent the summer creating a program to develop faculty skills using simulation pedagogy online or face to face. Simulation uses a debriefing model that promotes the facilitator role to actively engage student learning in small groups. An immersive, safe environment is essential for students to develop critical thinking skills. This summer program gave faculty tools they need to continue to provide quality instruction for virtual and face to face.
To complete the spring semester and make sure the nursing students have the final clinical experiences needed to graduate, Tim Laughlin developed an alternative online delivery method so students were able to experience the same planned JCCC scenarios to finish out the semester. Using computer applications already available to the faculty, video pictures of the patient became interactive to display patient vital signs, assessment data, and patient voice. Nursing faculty used Zoom for all Simulation scenarios, debriefing and feedback. The virtual adaptation was an example of the team effort and creative solution so the Nursing program was able to meet the student learning needs.
