The Bubble Inside a Bubble: Johnson County Community College
Join Dr. Kristy Howell to learn about her research on the origins of JCCC and a discussion of creating community colleges in "white-flight" towns.
In her dissertation, "OPEN DOORS AND CLOSED COMMUNITIES: CREATING COMMUNITY COLLEGES IN WHITE-FLIGHT TOWNS," Dr. Howell examines how the College of DuPage (CoD), in suburban DuPage County, Illinois, and Johnson County Community College (JCCC), in suburban Johnson County, Kansas, offer an interesting lens through which to examine topics of institutional history and culture, community relationships, and the leadership decisions of first presidents and their boards. The histories of CoD and JCCC, founded in restricted-residency, affluent, and rapidly expanding suburbs in the 1960s, also provide telling examples of campus/community interactions around the question of who could be a part of the community – and therefore the campus. Comparing these two campuses illustrates 1960s-era protests in the community colleges, describes how campus unrest occurred, and examines its management on nonresidential campuses.

Academy Award Winner Kevin Willmott
If you missed Academy Award Winner Kevin Willmott’s visit to campus last month, here is your chance to listen to it. The Black Student Union sponsored the event, and club officers enjoyed giving him a tour of the campus before his presentation. JCCC’s Kansas Studies Institute helped sponsor the event.
A record number of over 170 people attended the event in the CoLab.
The History of Black History Month, with Dr. James Leiker
An insightful discussion about the origins of Black History Month and how the event might evolve in the future. History professor Dr. James Leiker and host Robbie Miller have a frank, lively conversation about some of the complexities of talking about race in the United States.
The Peace and Justice Institute Academy
The Peace and Justice Institute offers a unique and powerful experience to teachers administrators, staff, counselors and SAFE coordinators working in Pre-K through higher education with the goal of creating more inclusive, respectful, compassionate and loving classrooms and citizens.
